Bio

Based in Ontario, Canada, Emmanuel Songsore is a multi-instrumentalist and composer. He hails from Loho, a small village in the Upper West Region of Ghana.

According to Emmanuel's parents, he started drumming on tables and showing significant interests in music at an early age. Emmanuel's first formal exposure to music was in his mid-teens, when he enrolled in piano lessons. Emmanuel struggled with piano lessons, often finding them overly restrictive. After a few lessons, he quit and embarked on a journey of discovery, which included attending churches and concerts in order to watch and listen to other musicians. He would often pick nuggets of wisdom from random musicians he met along the way. In the process, he also spent countless hours listening to the radio and mimicking what he heard on piano. Emmanuel attributes his musical development to his parents’ interests in listening to a broad range of musical genres, including world Music, reggae, pop music, traditional afrobeat, classical music, choral music, funk and indigenous music from across the world to name a few.

Along the way, Emmanuel's friends Ebo Sackey and Kofi 'IamBeatMenace' Boachie-Ansah played a critical role in his development, sharing their knowledge of piano and audio engineering respectively. His knowledge of audio recording further grew when he studied basic audio recording under the late Professor William Anku, a Ghanaian music theorist, ethnomusicologist, composer, and performer.

Emmanuel’s musical approach and expression relies heavily on improvisation and experimentation. He spent his formative years playing in church, where he was exposed to a wealth of styles including traditional Ghanaian/African music, gospel, choral works, contemporary Christian music, reggae among others. His exposure to these varying musical styles helped him develop a strong sense of rhythm and harmony. Philosophically, he views different musical styles as colors, which similar to art, can be combined to paint a beautiful picture.

Emmanuel is consistently immersed in a variety of musical projects, playing roles such as producer, co-writer, arranger, session musician and/or mixing engineer depending on the needs of each project. To date, he has worked with musicians from Australia, Canada (including Indigenous musicians), United Kingdom, France, Nigeria, Jamaica, United States and Ghana. Emmanuel achieves greatest satisfaction when he plays in retirement homes, hospitals and for underpreviledged populations. He has also shared his music with an Indigenous community in Ontario.

Emmanuel's goal is to share God-inspired instrumental piano music from the depths of his heart. Listeners can expect to hear original neoclassical piano compositions, ambient music, music scores and covers of existing worship songs. His ultimate hope and prayer is that his music brings hope, peace, rest, restoration, healing and wholeness. In addition to his love for music, Emmanuel holds a PhD in Geography and Interdisicplinary Environment and Sustainability. He currently works as a university research administrator.

Lullaby Baby

Emmanuel Songsore

How did this album come about? One afternoon my daughter completely refused to take a nap. I promised her I'd play the piano for her if she'd just lay down on the bed quietly. The track "You are enough" was recorded while noodling around on the piano. Within a few minutes, she was fast asleep.

How did this album come about? One afternoon my daughter completely refused to take a nap. I promised her I'd play the piano for her if she'd just lay down on the bed quietly. The track "You are enough" was recorded while noodling around on the piano. Within a few minutes, she was fast asleep.

All along, a dear friend named Renee consistently nudged me towards the idea of creating a lullaby album. Her persistence, mixed with the experience of that spontaneous session, made me think, "Why not?" So, here we are with "Lullaby Baby," a bunch of calm and relaxing tunes.

I'm no musical genius, just a parent trying to make life a bit more peaceful. I believe this music will bring relaxation to babies, children, adults and seniors alike.

I hope you enjoy and are blessed by it!

Introspection

Emmanuel Songsore

Introspection is made up seven original solo piano tunes played on a felt piano. The layer of felt placed between the hammers and strings gives the piano a very soft and delicate sound. I hope this music creates an atmosphere for rest, relaxation and reflection.

reflections

Emmanuel Songsore

This album focuses on the suffering we see along our city streets each day, e.g., panhandling, drug addiction, prostitution, homelessness...etc. It is a call to open our eyes, see the suffering of our neighbors and take action to make their lives better. I hope this music challenges us to reflect on those issues.

I hope these song make space for deep reflection on these critical attributes. The tracks are all named in my Indigenous Ghanaian language (Dagaare). I am confident that all problems in our world stem from the lack of these fruits. Below is the scripture that inspired these compositions:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
